Prototype PCB assembly for design validation and the next build
Build and evaluate your PCB design before committing to a wider production run. YT Electronic coordinates PCB fabrication, BOM sourcing, assembly and the inspection and test scope agreed for your prototype.
- Send a controlled design revision, quantity and the specific engineering questions the build should answer.
- Choose turnkey sourcing, customer-supplied materials or a mixed supply arrangement.
- Standard assembly is within 20 days after deposit; accepted expedited projects are within 3 days after deposit.
What to include in a prototype assembly RFQ
A useful prototype quote starts with a complete and consistent data package. We review the information needed to assemble the board, identify sourcing and manufacturing issues, and agree what can be tested before shipment.
- PCB fabrication data: Gerbers, drills, stack-up and material / finish requirements.
- BOM: manufacturer part numbers, reference designators, quantities, DNP positions and approved alternatives.
- Placement and assembly data: centroid / pick-and-place files, assembly drawings and polarity notes.
- Build objectives: quantity, intended application, critical components, known risks and required delivery date.
- Test information: programming instructions, functional test procedure, fixtures and acceptance criteria.
If you need engineering samples for different design variants, identify the BOM and placement changes for each version. A clearly marked revision reduces the risk of mixing files across variants.
From design review to assembled samples
- RFQ and DFM review: We check the manufacturing and assembly package and collect open questions.
- BOM confirmation: You approve availability decisions, customer-supplied materials and any proposed substitutions.
- Assembly preparation: The approved board revision, tooling and assembly instructions are prepared for the build.
- Inspection and agreed testing: Inspection, programming and test work follow the approved order scope.
- Evaluation and revision: Use the assembled samples and your validation results to define any changes for the next build.
DFM and assembly checks help identify manufacturing issues; they do not replace your design validation, regulatory assessment or system-level testing.
Choose the supply model that fits your prototype
| Model | When it is useful | What we need |
|---|---|---|
| Full turnkey | You want one supplier to coordinate boards, components and assembly. | Complete fabrication and BOM data, including substitution rules. |
| Partial turnkey | You hold selected critical parts and need the remaining materials sourced. | Clearly marked supplied and sourced BOM lines. |
| Consigned assembly | You provide the boards and components. | Material quantities, packaging, spare parts and handling instructions. |
For component sourcing and an end-to-end build, compare full turnkey PCB assembly. For ongoing engineering changes and multiple part numbers, see low-volume, high-mix assembly.
Prototype lead time and cost drivers
Standard PCB assembly is completed within 20 days after receipt of deposit. Expedited assembly is available within 3 days after receipt of deposit for accepted rush projects. The expedited schedule, material availability and test scope are confirmed in your quotation.
Tell us if a critical component, firmware release or fixture is still pending. Board complexity, component availability, sourcing requirements, special handling and test preparation can affect which schedule can be accepted. Freight transit is separate from the assembly lead time.
The quote should distinguish board fabrication, materials, setup, assembly, fixtures and testing where applicable. Small prototype quantities can still require setup work. We confirm quantity and build-specific costs from your files rather than publishing a price that does not match your design.
Prepare for a repeat build
Use one approved revision for the Gerbers, BOM, placement and test files. When a prototype changes, identify new components, DNP positions, test updates and differences from the previous build. Confirm that test points remain accessible and that programming connections and fixtures still match the revised board.
Panelization can affect handling and assembly. Review PCB panel requirements for assembly before finalizing the manufacturing package.
Prototype purchasing questions
Can you build from a BOM and Gerbers only?
Send the available files first. Placement data, assembly drawings or clarifications may still be needed before production can be confirmed.
Will you change the design or substitute parts?
Proposed manufacturing changes and component alternatives should be agreed with you before the affected work proceeds.
Can you run functional tests?
Provide a test procedure, pass/fail limits, firmware and fixture details so that the required work can be reviewed and quoted.
