What Are the Advantages and Disadvantages Of Selective Wave Welding

Why Select Selective Wave Welding?

The most common PCB style is the double-sided board (assembled with surface mount technology). This allows for more complex, smaller, lighter and faster products.

This requires a more selective method of welding PCBs than the wave-welding method.

Are the benefits of selective welding greater than the disadvantages?

Benefits

You can avoid welding test points by applying flux only locally, rather than on the entire surface.

Surface-mounted components may be weldable without glue, which is required to hold the component during reflow.

The adjustable nozzle allows for different parameters to be set, such as the contact time or amount of welder needed.

They are cheaper because they use less flux and welder.

Selective welding allows you to process boards which cannot be wave welded (e.g. boards with high components of PTH on both sides). It is the best feature, since there is no other option but to manually weld boards.

Disadvantages

A unique program is required for selective welding. This is similar to what surface mount machines do. The PCB Assembly can be made more efficient and less expensive by creating and fine-tuning the programs.

Theoretically, selective welding allows for each component to receive a different treatment.

However, the number of parameters increases the risk of a processing problem. Wave welding machines, on the other hand, have fewer parameters that can be changed (conveyor speeds, preheat temperatures, flux amount, and wave height), which makes them less susceptible to processing errors.

Bright Quality's most efficient way to attach components is by wave welding.
